Something very interesting happened in New Hampshire this week that you might have missed: The Georgia Republican lieutenant governor made a trip to the state touting his plan to re-birth a post-Trump GOP.

 

Dubbed "GOP 2.0," the plan is focused on a handful of pillars including national security, public safety and limited government, according to Georgia's Geoff Duncan.

 

"We as Republicans have forgotten to remind people why we're Republicans," Duncan told WMUR on Tuesday.

 

Duncan's vision for "GOP 2.0" is also very much about moving the party beyond the current 2024 frontrunner for the party's nod: former President Donald J. Trump.

 

Duncan told CNN earlier this year that Trump's insistence he won the election -- in both Georgia and nationally -- "disgusts" him, adding: “It’s not American. It’s not what democracy is all about. But it’s reality right now.”

 

In an op-ed for CNN published last month, Duncan wrote:

 

"Trump did not lose because of voter fraud or his conservative policies”. Biden is sitting in the White House today because voters grew tired of Trump's erratic behavior, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

"The upcoming elections cannot be a discussion about the past, unless we want to continue losing. Republican candidates cannot win general elections around the country if they exert all of their energy in the primary on a litmus test around unfounded election conspiracy theories."

Former President Trump's popularity is rising within the GOP. A new Quinnipiac poll finds that 78% of Republicans want to see Trump run for the office again in 2024, Business Insider reports.

In May, that percentage was 66%. Trump's overall approval rating with Republicans was found to be 86% in the new poll. Republicans also say Trump has had a mainly positive impact on American politics (84%) and/or a mainly positive impact on the party (85%).

 

Among Democrats, 94% said he's had a mainly negative impact on US politics, and 88% said he's had a mainly negative impact on the GOP. Independents were split nearly down the middle on those questions, but 58% of independents said Trump should not run in 2024, the Hill reports.

What Joe Manchin gets wrong about the Senate

 

 West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin offered progressives some advice:

 

If they want a bigger, more costly bill, they should 

 

"elect more liberals."

 

Which is a good line!

 

But Manchin misses the mark when it comes to the modern Senate!

 

According to GovTrack's ideology ratings,

 there are only two sitting Democratic senators -- Manchin and Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema -- who rank more conservatively than the least conservative Republican.

 

The middle is slightly more robust on the Republican side, with six GOP senators ranking more liberally than the least liberal Democrat.

paints the reality of the disappearing middle in stark terms, with every senator ranked based on their voting record in the current Congress.

 

The number of states that send a split partisan Senate delegation to Washington is just six, the lowest it has been in more than 100 years, according to a Pew Research Center analysis.

A Pew survey earlier this decade showed that 94% of Democrats were more liberal than the median Republican while 92% of Republicans were more conservative than the average Democrat.)

The issue is that there are so few moderates -- especially on the Democratic side -- that when the margin between the parties is narrow (as it is now), a single senator, like Manchin, has almost total power. 

 

The Point: The disappearing middle in the Senate has consequences. And one of the big ones is to make the few senators -- like Manchin or Sinema -- who still peg themselves as centrists hugely powerful in moments just like this.
